The Role of Deacons in the Catholic Church
Deacons are ordained ministers who serve the Church in various capacities (cf. CCC 1596) Unlike priests, they are ordained not for priestly ministry but for a ministry of service.
Ministry of Service
Deacons are called to serve the People of God through ministries of liturgy, word, and charity.
Their specific tasks include:
· Assisting the bishop and priests in the celebration of the Eucharist.
· Distributing Holy Communion.
· Assisting at and blessing marriages.
· Proclaiming the Gospel and preaching.
· Presiding over funerals.
· Dedicating themselves to various ministries of charity.
Deacons embody the Church's concern for the poorest and promote a consciousness of service within the Church. Their ministry is a valuable resource for the growth of a servant Church, following the example of Jesus Christ and the charism of the founder.
